COVID-19 Testing Q & A

What is COVID-19 testing?

COVID-19 testing determines whether you’re currently infected with SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) or if you had the infection in the past.

First Care Bossier can check for current infection with COVID-19 using a rapid antigen test. This is similar to a swab for strep throat, where your provider takes samples of cells from your throat and/or nasal cavities.

The results of your rapid antigen test come back within about 15 minutes. The alternative test for current infection with COVID-19 is the PCR test, which identifies genetic material unique to the virus. However, it can take much longer to get the results and requires specialized equipment.

Another form of COVID-19 testing is antibody testing. If you’ve had COVID-19 already, you should have antibodies in your blood that your immune system produced to fight off the infection.

Why should I undergo COVID-19 testing?

There are several situations in which COVID-19 testing could be helpful. If you have any symptoms of the infection, testing can determine whether it’s COVID-19 or not. Symptoms to be aware of include:

  • Fever and chills
  • Loss of taste or smell
  • A new, continuous cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headache
  • Nasal congestion or runny nose
  • Sore throat
  • Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea

Even if you don’t have any of these symptoms, you could still be infected – this is known as an asymptomatic infection. COVID-19 testing helps to prevent the disease from spreading by identifying people who are asymptomatic and could spread the disease without knowing.

Why is COVID-19 testing important?

COVID-19 is caused by a relatively new type of virus, so natural immunity in the world’s population is very low. Most people who get COVID-19 are likely to experience an illness that is similar in seriousness to the common cold, but for a significant number, COVID-19 infection presents more significant problems.

The disease can affect your lungs to such an extent that you need oxygen and eventually mechanical ventilation to support your breathing. Many of those who have to go on a ventilator fail to recover. Furthermore, patients who survive COVID-19 sometimes experience long-term health problems.

Reducing the spread of COVID-19 helps to protect the wider community as well as you and your family. It also prevents the health services from being overwhelmed with sick people.
